Fun at Little River

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

During our 2020 trip to the Smokies, we took a day trip with our kids to drive along the Little River, have a picnic lunch, and take a dip in the water. Access to the Little River from Smoky High House is about a 15 minute drive just down Line Springs Road which turns into Wear Cove Gap Road and takes you into the national park.

There are multiple picnic areas and parking spots along Little River Road for you to stop, take in the river views, or play in the river. Hiking trails are also marked close to this area for short (or long) walks/hikes. We recently took an early morning hike along the Metcalf Bottoms Trail, saw the Little Greenbrier School (a 19th century one room school house), and it dropped us at the Little River.

As always, don't forget to lock up your vehicles and store you food, download hiking trails (and stay on marked hiking trails), and pay attention to river water depths and currents.

*Pin drop is Smoky High House. Circled area is the location of Little River picnic areas and hiking trails. Little River Gorge Road also provides a scenic drive along the river with multiple stopping points along the way.
