Cades Cove: Stepping Back in History and Panoramic Views

One of our scenic drives from our vacation to the Smokies last summer included a trip to Cades Cove. From Smoky High House, Cades Cove is about a 21 miles (or about a 50 minute drive) and offers spectators panoramic views of the mountains and stopping points to experience a bit of history. As you drive through the flatlands, you can stop to tour log homes, churches, a mill, barn, and school houses used by European settlers in the 1800's. Our drive was even more exciting because we rented a Jeep from a local rental company that allowed us fresh air and clear views for miles.

A visit to Cades Cove includes driving the 11 mile loop which is a one-way and one-lane paved road around the cove. You can stop at the Visitors Center, enjoy the wildflowers, spot wildlife, and get out to stretch your legs to learn about early settlers and enjoy the awesome mountain views.

Instead of taking the whole loop, you can also drive north out of the area on Rich Mountain Road which is a secluded driving experience through the mountains and offers incredible lookout points:

Please note that from May-September on Saturday and Wednesday mornings, Cades Cove is only open to bicyclists and hikers before 10am. Also, be aware that certain times of year there may be traffic around the one-lane loop due to the influx of visitors.
